Black Cordon Vineyards is a very small winery in Napa Valley. We produce a "Napa Valley" Cabernet Sauvignon and barrel selection, vineyard designate Cabernets. We also produce a true Sonoma Coast Chardonnay and an Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. Our production of each and every wine is miniscule. In our quest to bottle great, not just good wines, we attend to every fine detail in the vineyard and in our winemaking with a hands on and completely involved style. We are old school in everything we do including our desire to interact with our customers personally and to avoid the internet as best we can. So please come and visit us or contact us via phone or email and we will do what it takes to introduce you to our wines.
Karen and David...that's us the winegrowers...were from our early twenties into wine, and the food and people that surrounded it. From our home in the Midwest we visited Napa Valley and the North Coast wine regions constantly. Finally the lure of the life we wanted to live in Napa was too strong so we hung up our careers and moved to the valley. That was 2004 and after all these years we both still remember the very first decision we made..."we will never bottle a wine that we are not proud of" We've had a lot of help over the years in keeping that promise from some very talented people...originally and for many years the team of Paul Hobbs and Julian Gonzalez. Julian continues on with us today in our own winery as winemaker and the very talented force that has driven the Black Cordon Vineyards style from the beginning.
Excellence in Winegrowing takes vigilance and attention to detail. We found out once we got started that small producers have more options to manage that detail and to produce wines of the best quality, character and complexity. Our desire to stay small is because we are people who want to always do our best and that means we want our wines to be as good as they can be. We use and emulate the knowledge we absorbed from the early Napa pioneers that befriended us as well as the expertise of some excellent and famous winemakers of our times. For us, small is where it's at. Why? Great wines really are actually made in the vineyard, and great vineyard care takes constant attention to the smallest details. Small lot fermentation instead of large quantity tanks will always produce a superior wine; especially Cabernet Sauvignon. Barrel fermentation for excellent Chardonnay is a must. These are just a few of the small winery advantages.
We started two separate wine labels...Black Cordon Vineyards and Sixteen by Twenty Wines...at the same time. One is not junior to the other. I suppose the main reason is that it gives us the chance to let the unique characteristics of each and every one of our vineyards show up in a bottle of wine. All the growing and winemaking is the same...the winery is the same...and the winemaker is the same. But up until now we kept the two labels separate. Well, our wine loving fans kept saying "come on, you're one big happy family so why not act like it" They are right, and we are, so here all of our wines are finally in one place. Cheers!

We really do want to know you and help you personally so please contact us directly if you would like to explore all of the wines we produce or to get information regarding one of our unique wine clubs....you choose the wines so there is never a surprise or disappointment. We will immediately send a response to you without any obligation or follow up nagging!

As a Wine Club Member you have access to all of the wines that we produce. That includes our limited production vineyard designate wines, past wine vintages, current wines and wines that haven't even been released yet. What makes our Club different is that you only get the wines you want because you do the selecting...handpick by yourself each time or have us choose special wines based on your selected profile. Choose from all the wines available to club members...from both Black Cordon Vineyards and/or Sixteen by Twenty Wines. It's all about getting the wines you really want!
"Napa Valley" Cabernet Sauvignon...a combination of barrels from our four vineyards in the mountains around the valley: Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder, Altas Peak and Mount George Coombsville
Barrel Selection Vineyard Designate Cabernet Sauvignon....These one or two barrel limited production wines are available only to Wine Club Members. Each vintage we personally select the few barrels that somehow shine above the rest and bottle them separately, as Vineyard Designate wines. And rarely we come across that special barrel that is as good as it can get...we bottle that as our Reserve Cru Cabernet Sauvignon.
Anderson Valley Pinot Noir...we consider Anderson Valley to be one of the great Pinot Noir regions in the world and this personally selected vineyard in Boonville is one of the best.
Sonoma Coast Reserve Chardonnay....the true Sonoma Coast from a spectacular vineyard allows us to vinify a Burgundian style Chardonnay that to us is "real" Chardonnay.
Sixteen by Twenty Wines...valley floor Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. Less expensive, less pedigree, but same detail and winemaking and really good stuff.
Sorry, we're old school with our websites just like we are with our winemaking...no pop up form here. Instead we will pay special attention to you and get to know you as a friend in wine. We take all of our interaction with our customers personally....whether you're a Wine Club Member or someone who is new to our wines. Please contact us directly with any questions or requests and as soon as we are in from the vineyard or back from the winery we will answer your email.
